Hearts of Joy: Love Abounds February 2018

February at Children’s Cancer Association (CCA) is always a special occasion. Each year, we organize our city-wide fundraising event all centered around Valentine’s Day and the season of love. This year, we made a number of changes, the first of which was renaming the event to Hearts of Joy to encompass a month-long fundraising endeavor.

Our Portland community showed up in a huge way, demonstrating how deeply passionate they are about the kids we serve. In total, with the help of our corporate partners, hospitals, board members, and volunteers, we raised an astounding $435K with our combined community efforts!

Sharing the Love from the KGW 8 Studio

Our new live on-air partners, KGW 8 and 101.9 KINK FM kicked off the month with an incredible day of stories from the families who are directly impacted by your donations.

Beloved anchors from KGW 8 interviewed CCA-served families, including the Keagbine family, whose late son, Danny was a CCA Hero, Lacelin Nordstrom, mother of CCA-served Heaven, and Moxie Balzar.

Moxie stole the show and captivated everyone’s heart with her live ukulele lesson, great fashion sense, and bubbly personality. Music took an essential role in helping her stay positive during her treatment for cancer and long hospital visits.

Volunteers from Dick Hannah Dealership, Northwestern Mutual, and Fortis Construction took phone bank donations and cheered each other on with each dollar raised! Our friends at Breakside Brewing sponsored a two-hour matching hour.

Spotlight interviewees on KGW 8 featured Random, Sol, and Otto! You can watch all their interviews on our YouTube channel.

Paper Hearts of Joy

Oregon and SW Washington businesses spent the month of February raising money for CCA by selling $1 and $5 paper hearts. Papa Murphy’s, Elmer’s, Dr. Bittner Dentistry for Kids, Brow Betty, A Flair For Gifts & Home, Flying Pie Pizzeria, Joe’s Burgers, Pietro’s Pizza, Pro Caliber, Sunset Lanes, and KingPins all participated.

Percentage of Sales

As a special Valentine’s Day treat, over 20 artisan businesses donated a percentage of their sales to MyMusicRx.  Those businesses included Black Wagon, Bowery Bagels, Burn Cycle, Cadillac Café, Circa 33, Country Cat, Deschutes Brewery, Extracto Coffee, Green Bridge Coffee, The Independent, Loyal Legion, Malka Diamonds, North 45, Paddy’s Bar and Grill, ¿Por Qué No?, Produce Row Café, Rally Pizza, Rudy’s Barbershop, The Station, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, and Videri Chocolate Factory.

Deschutes Brewery generously offered one dollar for every pint sold that day and Stumptown donated 100% of their profits nationwide to MyMusicRx!

Love at 425 Degrees

What says love better than a Heartbaker pizza from Papa Murphy’s? Thanks to our incredible partners, locations in Oregon and SW Washington, donating $1 per pizza sold.

Bloodworks Live Studio

Partnering with 101.9 KINK and Bloodworks Live Studio, the community also had a chance to win tickets to one of three “Hearts of Joy” concerts, which included performances from Ages & Ages, Typhoon, and Kyle Craft.

Who Won the Keys to Our Heart?

Last but not least, congratulations to Virginia Thompson, winner of the Keys to Our Heart Car Raffle with Dick Hannah Dealership! Don’t miss the chance to win again during our spring car raffle, details to follow soon.

If you haven’t had a chance to donate please consider making a donation today. Together we have the power to help seriously ill children and teens create life-long memories of happiness and joy.
